Your property tax assessment is used to determine the market value of your property.  The market value is used by local and county government as the basis for your annual tax bill.  Taxes that pay for schools, parks and recreation, government employees’ salaries and benefits, transportation infrastructures, and local law enforcement and fire departments.

If you believe your property is over-assessed you have the right to challenge that assessment by filing an assessment appeal.  There are usually two ways to determine if the tax assessor has valued your home too high.

  • how are homes similar to yours valued;
  • how much are homes like yours currently selling for.

If your assessed value is higher than your property’s market value, a successful appeal lowering the assessment will pay dividends in lower taxes for years to come.
